Connie,
I haven't tried to verify any of the info just yet, but I can answer one of your questions. Yes, she changed their names by "assuming" as in common law. I suppose that was the common thing to do for some. I can prove this. In 1997, my father admitted to me that I had a true biological grandfather other than the one (Kell) I grew up knowing. The Missouri Department of Health confirmed that my father was born Garry L. Brewer, not Kell. Out of retaliation I legally had my name changed to Kell-Brewer. Actually, I did this to preserve the two. You see...the Brewer part was hidden from the rest of the family. Boy, did I open up a can of worms! Both my father, Garry, and my uncle, George (Sonny) had to hire attorneys to have their "Kell" surname legalized. They were both in their late 40's when this happened! Now you know. I guess I pretty much have a good answer for myself. I didn't think to contact the Missouri Department of Health for a copy of dad's birth certificate. Thanks Connie.
