www.vitalrec.com has info on birth/death/marriage records for all states. Here's the site for early NY city records: http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/doris/html/3vital.htmlhttp://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/doris/html/3vital.html . As you can see, these records for the city exist to a certain extent for this early period. As it says, many (at least 25%) of pre-1910 births were never recorded since they occurred in the home and nobody reported them. I would assume a similar situation exists for Boston, although many cities didn't keep birth records before the Civil War.
