ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico José Márquez 1917 - 2004 José Márquez was born in Anton Chico, N.M., Aug. 26, 1917, to José Márquez and Barbara Garcia y Márquez. Dn. José was well known throughout the state as he traveled most of New Mexico while in the service of state government; Motor Vehicle Department and Land Department. He attended Highlands University in Las Vegas N.M. José ran his father’s General Store in Anton Chico in the early 1940s. José was a teacher in La Loma, N.M., but left when he was elected sheriff of Guadalupe County in the 1950s. He was active in the Democratic Party all his life. He was also co-owner of Jim’s Market in Farmington. José was well known at the livestock sales barns as an accomplished cattle rancher from Milagro whose natural knowledge of animal husbandry created impressive herds. The ranch he ran is part of the Anton Chico Land Grant. His grandfathers were among the original families who applied for the Anton Chico and Pecos Land Grants. Dn. José served in the United States Navy during World War II. Dn. José is survived by his wife, Corine Garcia; and children, Dolores Márquez, Albert Márquez, Conchita Lucero and son-in-law, John Lucero. The families are descendants of the Geránimo Márquez, one of the First Spanish families that came with Don Juan de Oñate in 1598 to settle Nueva España. A Rosary will be recited at Prince Of Peace Catholic Church, 12500 Carmel Ave. NE on Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at 7 p.m., with visitation beginning at 6 p.m. A Mass will be celebrated at Gate of Heaven Chapel on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at 10 a.m., with an ennichement to follow.
