Family Name History
The Irish surname Maroney is today particularly associated with the county of Galway, and is an anglicization of the Gaelic O Maulruanaidh, which literally signifies "the son of the descendent of Rooney".Also found in Fermanagh as Mulrooney, this was the name of a once powerful sept sugjugated by the Maguires. Its first chief, O Maulruanaidh was one of the three chiefs of Crumthan, an extensive territory, sometmies called Cruffon, comprising the barony of Killian and part of Ballymoe in County Galway, where they were celebrated by the 17th century poet O'Heerin in the following lines:
O Cahill and O Murain the active,
O Maulruanaidh of the splendid banquets,
Like trees which shelter the fertile land,
are the chiefs of Crumthan of the moody plains.
