Ouma Marks / Volksrust South Africa Late 1800's

My maternal great grandmother was a Marks who lived in Volksrust. The only thing which I can remember being told to me about her was that she was a feisty old lady who did not take nonsense.

Apparently apart from all her own children and being a widow she had also adopted and breastfed a boy from english descent who later went on to become the mayor of Volksrust and when he was instrumental in raising property taxes she forced her way into a council meeting and among other things reminded him on whos breasts he suckled!

Another story about her was that at an advanced age already, she one evening realized that there was someone hiding under her bed. She fetched a heavy walking stick and promptly dragged what turned out to be a young native by his foot and gave him a good hiding with that walking stick or 'kierrie' as we call it locally.

I would really like to know more about her and where the family name Marks come from. I dont know what her maiden name was unfortunately. Also of interest to me is whether the Marks family line have any Jewish links?

Regards
J.C Engelbrecht
