Hi Jim,
Well I was told by my grandfather that there was some sort of disagreement in the family and some of the brothers chose to keep the s and the others chose to drop it. Of course this is just a story, nothing that I can prove.

Others that I have talked to said it was more likely that somewhere along the way the name was just mispelled and it stuck.
I would like to find out the truth but haven't yet. I do believe that they are all related though.
