Traditional memory has confused the names of the father Peter and his son Andrew. The "Mering" Family (1929) mixed up the generations.
Peter [ca 1763--1790, NJ]
M: Mary _____ [perhaps d 1840, OH] ca 1783.
The "Mering" Family (1929) asserts that "Andrew" left a widow and that she was the Mary Maring who was married to Frederick Sockman on 16 October 1798 by Jacob Senn (recorded in Sussex Co, NJ, Marriages A, 22). His name was spelled "Sackman" by the Rev Senn, and a copyist entered it as "Saukman" in the record book. A Sussex Co, NJ deed (16 Sept 1799, Book C, page 401), however, informs us that Frederick Sockman and wife Mary (late widow of Peter Mearing, late of Newton), Catherine Mearing, and Elizabeth Mearing, (also spelled "Maring"), all of Frankford Twp, signed over all rights of dower and inheritance to John Mearing and William Boyd, for $20 paid by John Mearing of Newton, 29 acres "late of Peter Mearing deceased" in Independence Twp (now Warren Co, NJ). (Witnesses were John Lesh and David Tharp.)

Thus he would have just turned 16 and would have been born about 1763. His name is on the next surviving lists--1783 and 1784--taxed on 50 acres. There were 6 white in inhabitants in 1784. After 1784 his name does not appear there on tax rolls. It must have been around this time that he moved to Sussex Co, NJ, where very few tax records were preserved.

George and Mary Mearing each signed with an "X". An inventory was taken by Captain Daniel Struble and Peter Smith. The inventory suggests that Peter farmed and had a family; among the items inventoried were sheep, cattle, horses, bee hives, pigs, 10 acres of grain in the ground, a wagon, a sled, farm implements, kitchen utensils, a dutch stove, carpenters tools, a saddle and bridle, 2 spinning wheels, pewter, earthen and tea ware, knives and forks, 4 bedsteads, beds and bedding, a table, 4 chairs, and so forth. Total value was 93 pounds, 13 shillings, 6 pence.

Until there is more information, it is only tentative that this was Peter's wife.

The "Mering" Family says that "Andrew" had six children: Margaret, Elsie, Joseph W, Peter, a son name unknown, and a daughter name unknown. It is unclear how this list was arrived at and it is not altogether accurate; for it was Peter's son Peter who had 3 sons and 3 daughters.

Peter's daughter Margaret [b ca 1786/87, NJ--13 Sept 1860, OH] was recorded as "Margaret Mearing" when she was married to Aaron Rose [ca 1782--September 1849, OH] on 16 August 1807 by Daniel Predmore in Sussex Co, NJ. They moved first to Colerain Twp, Belmont Co, OH (1820 census) and then to Richland Co, OH. On the 1830 and 1840 censuses they were enumerated in Plymouth Twp; in 1850 Margaret was residing in Cass Twp. Frederick Sockman's will (Book A, 231) mentions his namesake Frederick, son of Aaron and Peggy Rose. Aaron Rose made his will in OH; it names Frederick, Thomas, Andrew, Mary Ann (Mrs Peter Rice), Emily (Mrs David Long), Martha (Mrs Wesley McLaughlin), Margaret, and Isabella. Jesse Maring, Margaret's nephew, was a witness to the will which was dated 19 Feb 1847. Margaret was buried at the Lutheran Cemetery, Cass Co, Richland Co, OH, as was her brother Peter.
