Yes, natural de literally means "native of" and it was used in place of "born in". He may have been born in Puerto Rico, but I guarantee you that his ancestors were from Spain.
My Marin family hails from Las Villas, and guaracabulla in the central province of Santa Clara. They married into the Puerts, Llanes, and Rodriguez families. Let me know if these surnames/places mean anything to you. I have info going back to the early 1800's.
