Hi Maggie,
I know some Marden's from England. While there in London, I contacted some and have heard from them. Most of them come from the south east and south west. My family claimed to have settled in England via the Netherlands as French Hueguenots. The French names were not very well received in England and one story I heard while visiting Mardens in Dorset was that in order to survive in England they took on the name of the villages. There are four villages of Marden in England. All of the Mardens that I know and the ones in England that I have met, have not been fair, but have a French appearance--dark, wavy hair--etc. including myself. I have not been able to trace how far back, but my great grandfather was George Warren? Marden from North Conway, New Hampshire. I believe he had three children--Elizabeth--never married, Archibald, married, no children and my grand father, Walter Rueben, married Lillian Sammis from Brooklyn, NY sometime in the 1870's. He was a civil engineer and lived in many places, settling finally, about 1900 in Albany, NY. They had 6 children--Virginia, died as a child, Walter died as a child, Susan, died at 21 unmarried, Rolfe, the oldest, lived into his 60's and had one child Elizabeth, Warren died in his late 40's, married, no children and Paul Cornell, my father, died at 35, married to Marjorie Sarah Hewitt in 1926. I am the only child, Marjorie Suzanne Marden.
