Regarding the meaning of 'Marden'
I have a book of walks in West Sussex and at the beginning of a walk around West Marden, East Marden and Upmarden it gives the following:-
‘Marden' or ‘Marere-Dun’ is the Old English for boundary down. There were boundaries between the kingdoms of South and West Saxons.
