Try looking for MASSEY or any variation of that name. I believe I have seen that John was the son of Hugh Massey, the sheriff you mentioned. My grandparents pronouced the name Marcy as Massey. It took me a while to figure out that the name was Marcy. Some of the old folks (and this is their cousins) still say Massey, but its spelled Marcy. Must be the southern dialect.
