Am not related. May be of interest to someone who is. I have no further info but additional old newspaper extracts may be found at RL:

Stockton Daily Independent
Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA
>>TUESDAY, 21 MAR 1865<<

SAN FRANCISCO DISPATCH, Mar. 20 - David MAHAN, Sylvester FARREL and A. MARCEY were today pronounced insane and sent to Stockton.

>>WEDNESDAY, 22 MAR 1865<<

INSANE - D. MAHAN, a native of Ireland; Sylvester FARREL, a native of Indiana; and A. MARCY, a Frenchman, all insane persons committed to the State Asylum from San Francisco, arrived in charge of Deputy Sheriff C. Martin yesterday morning on the steamer Julia. FARREL and MARCY are soldiers from the Presidio. A San Francisco paper says MAHAN became insane in consequence of injuries received by a fall some time ago and his insanity is manifested more particularly by continually shouting for Jeff Davis. On his way from the steamer to the Asylum he kept up the same kind of shouting.
