In August 1776, two companies were raised in the Wyoming Valley in Penn to defend Westmoreland.Rufus Bennet enlisted 9-1-1776 (Affidavit signed by Rufus Bennet, April 16, 1818, Pension and Warranty files, National Archives, Washington, DC) After the disasters to Gen Washingtons’ army in New York however, these two companies were sent to join Washingtons’ army.As a part of these forces Rufus Bennet took part in the battles of Mill Stone, Bound Brook and in the battles of Brandywine, of Germantown, and of Mud Fort. During the time Rufus Bennet served in the Revolutionary War he was a private in Capt Ransons’ Company, Capt Spauldings’ Independent Co and Capt Eells’ Company (Conn Military Record 1775-1848, compiled by authority of the General Assembly under direction of Adj Gen S R Smith, L A Barbour, F E Camp and G M White, 1889 pages 263-6 and 317)
Rufus was home in July 1778 and took part in the battle between the people of the Wyoming Valley, Penn and the British and Indians on July 3, 1778.In the flight of the survivors which followed the battle, two Indians were I close pursuit of Rufus with tomahawks in hand when Col Butler galloped his horse close by and Rufus seized the long switch tail of the horse, hoping to out-distance his pursuers.Just as his hold broke, they came upon Richard Inman, who had fallen out on the way to the battlefield, and on Col Butlers’ command he shot the first Indian and the other then stopped and ran back.The two men then made their way on foot to the safety of the fort . Rufus Bennet served until the 7th day of June, 1783, when he was discharged at West Point, NY
Rufus Bennet is buried in the Hanover Green Cemetery, Luzerne Co., Pa., where a monument, placed by the Wyoming Valley Chapter of the DAR states that he was at one time one of Gen Washingtons’ life guards.
