Marcus, Whitechapel, London family line - Philip Marcus

Hello.

I desperately need some help regarding my family history...

Most of our family records were either destroyed during the Holocaust or through the annals of time, so I only have info going back to my Great, Great, Great Grandfather Philip Marcus (born+- 1832).

He lived in Whitechapel, London and was a shipping agent. He had one son that we know of (my great, great gandfather John Marcus b: 1863), but any other info regarding the British side of my family ends there.

John came to South Africa in 1879 and briefly married a Ms Rosa (Rose?) Kantorowicz (who we also know nothing about). They had a son named Philip and a daughter named Dora. John founded the first auctioneering business in Cape Town, South Africa called 'John Marcus & Son's' and was awarded the Queens medal for his bravery during the Kaffir Wars fought during the late 1800's in Natal, South Africa.

John's, son Philip took over the business, who in turn left it to his three sons, Henry Marcus, Richard Marcus and Philip Marcus (Jnr).

Richard Marcus married Dorothy Chadwick, who had my father John.

Trying to get as much info out of my dad as possible, he seems to recall that his father (Richard) believed that the family came from Poland originally who then emigrated to Denmark (out of persecution). The name at this time was apparently Markussen but shortened to Marcus once they reached Britain. I'm guessing it was changed for naturalization purposes?

So, if anyone out there knows about the Whitechapel (British) line connected to Philip Marcus who remained in Britain, please let me know.

Please ask your perents and grandparents about this family line. I can't tell you how much this info would mean to me and my family.

Best regards

Nicholas (Nick) Marcus (aged 26)
Cape Town, South Africa

Please mail me with any info you may have

Thank you!
