I'm looking for information on the Marcus family that came to Jackson County, Iowa in the late 1850's.
I believe the partiarch to be a John Marcus, but can find little documentation on him. In the 1860 census for Tete Des Morts, he is listed as having a one year old daughter named Caroline. There is also a Henry Marcus, age 7 living with the family of John and Hannah Knolle nearby. I believe that this Henry was my Great Grandfather.
The 1870 census lists Caroline as an Orphan.
In 1870, 17 year old Henry (Markus) is a laborer on the farm of Herman and Catherine Groethen, along with two of the Knolle children. John Knolle lives with Nicholas and Catherine Fritz, nearby. There also is a Mary Markus, age 15 living there.
In the 1925 census, Henry lists his parents as John Marcus and Annie Brimmer. As it turns out Hannah Knolle’s former name was Hannah Adelaide Brummer. And she was also known as Anna. That looks like a match. So I tend to believe that John Marcus may have been an ex-husband of Hannah.
John Knolle, Hannah Brummer, John Marcus, and Herman Groethen are all from Hannover.
Any information will be greatly appreciated!
