Marcus in NC, Ellis D. and Nancy Penly

There is reference to the children of Nancy PENLY by Ellis D. MARCUS in the 1850 Federal census for Cherokee Co, NC, p. 144-73A, #950: name listed as "Penley" although other spellings listed her as "Penly", shows her age as 50, b. NC; CHILDREN in household: Catharine, 23, F, b. NC; Lucinda, 22, F, b. NC; Frances (believed to be Frances Iowa), 13, F. b.NC; Alfonzo, 11, M b. NC, Silvanus, 7 M, b.NC; (and includes three children who are reported by family descendents to be the children of Lucinda MARCUS:) George (=Dallas Ellis), 5, M, b. NC; Nancy, 3 F, b.NC; and William, 1, M b.NC.

There is also another Frances Iowa MARCUS who was born to George Dallas Ellis MARCUS and one of his spouses. George went by the name "Dallas" from what family says.

Some of Nancy Penly's children are under the name of PENLY or PENLEY; others are under the name of MARCUS. Nancy was not married to Ellis D. MARCUS while she was having many of their children, and is listed in several census as HoH until circa 1860 when Ellis D. was listed for the first time as HoH. Also, Ellis De Marquis, as I understand the original name was spelled, changed his name to Ellis D. Marcus sometime during his life I've been told.

Lucinda had three children out of wedlock, and the William, youngest listed, was my g-gf, Rev. William M. PRUETT. It is reported by one source that George or Nancy might be by someone named ESTES; others say George (Dallas Ellis) was the child of PRUETT also. Lucinda then married James Lynn HOGUE and had many more children, all of which are listed in rootsweb.

Hope this clarifies things for those who might be researching this family line. It gets quite confusing with last names and such, and if anyone can add further insights to this line, it would be most welcome and appreciated. Nana
