I have often heard people referring to him as Stephen F. Marcum, and wondered if you could tell me that source? Someone once told me it was listed in his father, Josiah Marcum's, pension papers but I just don't see it there.
I know what you mean about them having the same names over and over. I've seen in some cases it going down every other one, being the same name from father to son, etc. Naming them after their grandfather.
What I had heard on the Rhoda and Elizabeth Saddler connection, and don't have a definite proof, just what Harry Marcum had told me on them...was that Rhoda Saddler was the daughter and married Jacob Marcum. The mother was Rebecca Elizabeth Kerr and married a Saddler, having Rhoda, then he must have died and she then married Stephen Marcum. I estimated that Stephen and Elizabeth married about 1802 or just before...he was one of the oldest sons, and had already married and brought his family up to Cabell Co, VA, from the western neck of Virginia, where they had lived. Rhoda Sadler and Jacob Marcum married in Floyd Co, KY, in 1817 when Rhoda was about 18 years old.
I was told both Rhoda and Elizabeth were born in Scotland, and if this were true with Rhoda being b. 1799 in Scotland and then Elizabeth marrying Stephen just about 1801 or 2, they must have came over by boat to the new world, with Eliz. either as a widow or her husband dying enroute. My guesstimations girls!
Don't take this as fact, but use it to help piece your puzzle together. I'm sure those lower counties in Virginia would have some proof of existance for some of these people, but I've just not gotten down there yet.
