James Marchman was indeed Sheriff in Hancock County in the early 1800's and held the office until his death in 1825/1826. He was my great-great-great granddad on my mothers side. There are two books written on the Marchman family - one 'The Genealogy of the Marchman Family in the Southern States' published in 1930 by Dennis Marchman {living in Florida at the time} the other 'Henry Stephen Marchman' published in 1983 by Watt P. Marchman {Ohio}. The first is badly in need of dates. He said no one responded to inquiries he sent out to all Marchman namesakes. the second takes time to sort out because of the way it is put together. I've spent many years trying to put all these pieces together and still having trouble. It seems most of those with any viable information are gone.
