Hi, Nicole. The family name was Meerbodt, which basically refers to someone who lives near a swamp. Johannes was from Hanua, Germany. While it is certainly possible that the family somewhere had Jewish roots, they are not very recent or apparent. The family bible - a Christian bible and Protestant Psalter - not just the Torah, was brought to the states by Johannes. It dates to 1758. Moreover, a number of years ago a physician from Ohio did a quite extensive history of the Marbuts back to the 1500s. Almost all of the records he used to document the family were church records of marriage and baptism. Clearly, if the family were originally Jewish (for which I've seen no evidence), it goes back to before the 1500's.
