I was looking for info on William Henry Mapes when I saw this posting.
Esther Ann Willmore is from my family. If it helps any, her nickname was Minnie. My mother used to talk about Minnie Mapes -- I remember it because it was catchy.
The info I have on William Henry Mapes:
His parents were Horace and Mary Jane (Williams) Mapes of Iosco Twp, Livingston Co MI (1854) and Stockbridge, Ingham Co, MI (1899). I got this from doing research -- and I don't have anything to indicate I have the wrong William Henry Mapes. Is it a common name?
Esther and William had no children. He was born 18 Sep 1860 in MI or NY and d. 17 Dec 1909 Gorham, NY.
William on the census:
1860, 1870, 1880 Iosco, Livingston, MI
1900 I did not find him
1910 Dead?
1920 Stockbridge, Ingham, MI
Yes, these census findings leave room for them to have been in Gorham.

My guess would be that his death date of 17 Dec 1909 is a divorce date because he appears to be in Stockbridge for the 1920 census. This does not match Esther's obituary -- unless the family was covering up a divorce. This is possible - a sister of Esther's has confusing marriage entries and a highly possible 2 divorces -- but the family records omit one of the marriages and the other husband is ignored (children from that marriage are acknowledged, but with no explanation of their parentage.)
I am confused about the Gorham references because I don't know of any reason for them to have been in NY. My grandmother had said they were in Gorham, but not why, but my mother knew Esther Ann (or knew of her) and Mom had never been to Gorham NY. She lived in Lansing, not far from Stockbridge.
Esther's Obituary from Stockbridge, Ingham Co, MI paper 17 Feb 1938 -- I put some notes in brackets
-----------------------------------------------------
Esther Ann Willmore, daughter of Thomas and Ellen Willmore of Waterloo Township, Jackson County, Michigan, was born Nov. 2, 1851 and remained on the farm until May 7, 1875, when with her parents she took up her residence in Jackson City where she lived until Nov. 23, 1881 when she was united in marriage to William Henry Mapes of Gorham, N.Y. [Did he live in Iosco and move to Gorham just before or after getting married?]
She lived in Gorham until after her husband's death, Dec. 17, 1909. She then came to Jackson to care for an invalid sister until her sister's death, June 8, 1910. She then visited relatives in Oklahoma and New York [I know who the Oklahoma relatives are, but no idea who the New York relatives would be] until Jan. 12, 1912 when she established her home in Stockbridge where she lived until her death Feb. 13, 1939.
She has always been a member of the Episcopal Church but owing to the absence of a local Episcopal parish, she has since living here, been a regular attendant and an active worker in the Presbyterian Church.
She was an active member of both the Eastern Star and Rebecca Lodges of this village.
She is the last of a family of seven children and leaves eleven nieces and nephews and many friends. [The nieces and nephews are accounted for in the Willmore family, so they were not referring to any Mapes relatives]

If you can help me clear up my questions, I would appreciate it.
