Thank you Joe for any help you can supply!
Family history says Wms father was an Isiah, thus the mistake of putting him in the wrong family. Done by one of the grandchildren who should have known her grandfather's name. (that's why we think it is Isiah) While my husband and I were doing research in NY we discovered that Isiah died before Wm was born so could not have been the correct Isiah!
Since the 1840 census has head of house names only it's been a chore trying to find a 9 yr old male. I have no access to the 1850 census on line so haven't found him in that census. He married in 1856 so should still be living with parents in 1850.
Hopefully someone will see this post and help me out.
