I find the family living in Blanchard Township, OH in the 1850 US Census:
Ohio, Blanchard, Hancock, Sheet 14, Line 6
(They are living next to the Samuel Cummings family and the Jacob Snelbecker family)
He may also be living in Montgomery, Ohio in 1840:
Ohio, Marion, Montgomery, Page 5
Perhaps James is a relative of Phineas Mapes of Blanchard, Ohio.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
