I may have some insight as to the Indian herritage question on the Mapes family in Texas. It may not hold water but it's a possibility. One of my fathers Aunts or cousins is Theora Mapes (Evans) I had talked to her on the phone last year and had asked her about any indian herritage in the family as this was mentioned by my grandfather. Her reply was very definately no indian blood in this line of the family. Her thoughts on this were that several of the Mapes family in Texas came from Indiana and it was possible that one of the Mapes children mistakenly thought of being from Indian descent as opposed to being from Indiana. Just a theory.
