Hello,
I am a ggg-granddaughter of Tillman Cantrell Manus - "the Old Man," via his daughter Lavina.
I'm really curious about Tillman Manus's relationship with his son, Tillman. I read your message about how Tillman supposedly disclaimed any blood relationship with Tillman Jr.
In the 1880 census, Tillman Jr. is living on Tillman Senior's farm, working it, and he is listed as Senior's son.
On the other hand, I have found records that Junior was apprenticed at least twice in Tennessee while he was a child -- evidently this was done by the state if a child was an orphan, or if his father was not supporting him (an early version of foster care, I suppose). Also, in Senior's memoirs, there is absolutely no mention of his namesake.
Do you have any other information on the story of Tillman and his namesake?
Also, I have seen other people on message boards saying that Sally Brown was an American Indian. Do you know any more about her and her family?
Thank you!
Sincerely,
April McDevitt
Sincerely,
April McDevitt
