Isabella Bruton Askew, nee Manuel/Emanuel?
Hello,
I'm researching Isabella Bruton Askew from old Dobbs (now Lenoir) County, North Carolina. She married twice, first to a Mr. Bruton in NC before 1761 and then a Mr. Askew in SC between the early 1780s and 1791, both men leaving her a widow. She later was in Tattnall County, GA, by 1821, living near her son Nathan Bruton/Brewton. I've not found her maiden name, one family story is that she was born an Emanuel (Nathan had a son named Emanuel). I believe that Nathan named his son for David Emanuel, the sitting Georgia governor when Emanuel Brewton was born, but it is worth exploring. I know there was a Manuel/Emanuel family in colonial Sampson Co, NC. Has anyone come across a Isabella Emanuel in mid-1700 NC? Any assistance or suggestions would be appreciated!
