Montei/Mantei/Montai from Poland/Russia 1903
I'm looking for info on my great-grandfather's family. His name was Gustave Montai, born about 1885, arrived in the US around 1902/03.He married Lydia Rentz and lived in Connecticut. He died in 1926.His children were William, Gustave (my grandfather), Olga, Alfred and Edward.
His family appears to have been of German descent (they spoke German at home) but according to the 1920 census, he came from Russia/Poland.Family story is that he emigrated to the US to avoid compulsory military service.Family stories also said he had a cousin, Augustus Montai (located at some point in Connecticut), and a brother, Edward, who emigrated to Canada and worked on the railroads.
The only town name reference I have is "Lustin" (from his son's birth certificate) which I'm sure was Americanized.
I've seen the family last name written as Mantei, Montai, and Montei, which just adds to the confusion.
If any of this sounds familiar or anyone has any info, it would be greatly appreciated!
