Mannion vs Manion
What do you think? When doing genealogy research are Manion (one N) and Mannion (two Ns) the same family? I always thought there was no mistake with me - I knew who I was and it was spelled Mannion. I have recently found my grt grandfather (born somewhere in Galway c1851) was known as Manion. His son (my grandfather) was born Manion but by the time he married it was Mannion. My grt granfather's marriage certificate was signed X - the mark of Michael Manion. If he was illiterate, and could not even sign his name, then how am I supposed to know who to search for? Does this indicate that the spelling does not matter at all once we are back beyond 1900? What do others think?
Also - how on earth can you ever find one of these elusive ancestors when all the men are named Michael, Patrick or John???
Puzzled Mannion
