Ken,
Yes, that Stephen Manning was Marcum Lott Manning's oldest son, b. abt. 1800 in S.C.The family moved to Conecuh, AL, as shown in the 1820 census.I have some census records recorded in Texas listing a wife (name unknown at the moment as I am working w/o notes).Stephen was in Texas before 1840 as he and his brothers received Texas Land Grants.I also have a document, an application, where Stephen is requesting a pension based on his military service. The government did not find specific information regarding said service; therefore, some of his military buddies wrote letters of acknowledgement on his behalf....that was either in 1915 or he died in 1915.I didn't know that he had been married twice. He was living w/ a son, so assume his 2nd wife was deceased. He was in poor health...think he may have had tuberculosis, and destitute at the time he made application.
You might check the vital statistics in Conecuh Co. and Escambia to see if there is a divorce on file.I have to assume that is the case since his first wife continued to live in Escambia Co.Murcum Lott Manning's (Sr.) will was written in AL but was probabed in Walker Co. The children are mentioned in the will....dk about the grandchildren. If your wife is related to Stephen, she might find it interesting to know that Mark Manning came to Texas when he was 97 years old and lived to be 100, dying in 1850.There is a lot of misinformation about him on the internet and in the genforum. The information that I have written in various places on the genforum are correct as my information is documented.Hope this helps.I can give you some of the details we discussed if you wish....
Any information you have on his 2nd wife or otherwise will be appreciated.Good Luck.
