Hi Celia,
Sorry it has taken so long to reply.
Joseph Mann (my 3X great grandfather) was born in 1805 and married Grace Ford who was born in 1806 also in Ashburton. They married in Walworth, London (Surrey)in 22 May 1831.They then moved to Birmingham and had their first child 9 May 1832.So far as I can find they had 7 children in Birmingham and were living in London again by the 1851 census.Joseph was a carpenter.Their last child John born in 1845 was my 2X great grandfather. Joseph died in Islington, London in 1880.Grace died in 1883 in Islington Workhouse. It seems likely that Joseph and probably Elias left the Ashburton area for work.In the late 1820's to early 1830's the wool industry suffered. The Ashburton area was a thriving wool weaving area until that time and the area went into decline and a lot of people had to move away to find work. Does your family still live in the York area? How far back have you managed to find ancestors?Would love to know more?
