Tina, I've never seen the Henry Mann born circa 1801 in Chatham County, NC mentioned in anything authoritative with the middle initial M.In fact, I don't recall ever seeing his name as anything but Henry Mann. The 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census entries for Henry mention no middle name or initial.Nor do any of the Nash Herndon papers I have ever seen.Have you actually seen his middle name or initial mentioned on a document or documents? The Henry M. Mann born 3 April 1823 is the only Henry of that era in NC that I have seen with the middle initial M.
I am sure the Susan Wingeham, purported 1st wife of Henry Mann, was actually Susan Winningham. There were not any Wingehams in Chatham County; in fact, I can find that name nowhere in NC in the 19th century.I feel sure that it was a misspelling as often names were misspelled as you know before the 20th century. There was a Thomas Winningham who lived very near William Mann in the early 1800s, and he was the only Winningham in the county or area, and he had daughters. He must have been Susan's father.
Thomas moved a few miles north to southern Orange County, NC by 1840. Apparently he died there in the 1850s and did so intestate. However, he had property, including nine slaves in 1850, so there may be estate papers in the State Archives in Raleigh for Thomas. I know he had a son named Thomas. Any deeds mentioning any Winningham as Grantee or Grantor in the first 60 years of the 1800s in both Chatham and Orange counties would also be good to investigate.
