On 2 May 1701, Mary Mann of Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia, widow, gave power of attorney to James Bray, Jr., to sue for certain goods and chattels due her as the executrix of Elizabeth Pettus's will made on 2 May 1700. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Pettus of Littletown Plantation, James City County, who died about 1690. Evidently, Elizabeth had died between 2 May 1700 and 2 May 1701. The POA further states that Elizabeth's property had been withheld from Mary as Elizabeth's executrix for several years, which is odd because Elizabeth could not have been dead for over a year. Edmund Berkeley and William Sedgewick witnessed the POA, which was proved the same day in York County court.
I would like to know if this Mary Mann was your ancestor, and, if so, what her connection was to Elizabeth Pettus and James Bray, who apparently had been Elizabeth's guardian. This information could be very useful for a book that I have been writing on the history of the Pettus family.
