Jack:
I am Jo Ann Crafton, granddaughter of Franklin Cherry Mangum, born 1859, Lauderdale County, Alabama, the brother of your Lucy C. Mangum Daniel.
Family gossip handed down from my grandmother Mangum to my mother, James Mangum caught his wife Martha at a barn dance with a man, James shot and killed the man who was with his wife. A few days later James M. Mangum was shot and killed while working in his field farming.
April 1887 Lycurgus Looney was charged with the murder of James Mangum. The court trial continued for several years, and in October 1890, a jury found Lycurgus Looney not guilty. Lycurgus Looney's uncle WilliamWashington Looney, was the probate judge, and County Sheriff Of Ozark County, Missouri.
In October of 1887, my grandpa, Franklin Cherry Mangum was ordered to pay a $300. appearance bond he had signed for his brother, Ed, who was charged in 1886, with disturging the peace and exhilbiting a pistol.
On December 7, 1887, Thomas Carothers Mangum, James M. Mangum's father, applied in Ozark County Probate Court to be administrator of James Mangum's estate.
My mother told me that her uncle (Ed) Howel Edward Mangum, was a roving gambler, wore a money belt, and carried a gun.
