Alot ofmy Luna family information is from the research of Mary Ruth (Luna) Sparks, the daughter of Mearle and Stella (Martin) Luna. Perhaps, you kow her? Also some of the families information was obtained from the book, A History of Ozark County, MO, 1841-1991. My husband's families (Willhoit-Sallee-Jones-Wallace) were also early pioneers of the area. I forwarded your reply to Mary Ruth (Luna) Sparks. Perhaps, as you say we may never know the truth of what happened. I would be happy to forward my Luna-Mangum-Daniel research to you for your review and/or corrections or additionals. Feel free to contact me directly. Thanks for responding.Joyce [email protected]
Hi Joyce--My name is Jack Street . My mother was Lydia Anne Daniel,Dau. of Lucy Mangum Daniel. What is your line? How did you come to know of the dispute between the Luna family and the Mangum Family? I am 80 yrs. old and I was told the following by a cousin (b. 1910) and confirmed by Lucy's youngest dau. May, who was b.1900. According to them, James Mangum and another man were out in a field when they were approached by a man named Luna. An argument ensued about some hogs that were running on open range and Luna shot James. As he lay dying he handed his gun to this man who was with him and said. He has killed me and now it is up to you to kill him. Lucy lived in Paragould and was a cook in the railroad hotel there. There was a certain man who would come for a visit in subsequent years and it is said that Lucy always gave him the red carpet treatment. It was surmised that this was the man who had dispatched the Luna who had killed her brother (Jim) James. Then I heard another story that it was James brother , Ed.( Howell) who had taken care of business . Perhaps we will never know. Jack

According to family legend, James M. MANGUM caught his wife, Martha R. SMITH at a barn dance with a man in the fall of 1886. James shot and killed the man that his wife was with, which is said to have been named LUNA, a brother of Lucurgis "Curgiss" LUNA. Several days later, James was working in his field when he was shot and killed (near Highway 181 in Ozark County). This started a vendetta among the Luna and Mangum families. His brother, Howel Edward MANGUM, went after Lycurgus LUNA intending to kill him. Howel MANGUM was thrown in jail, costing Thomas MANGUM $300 to get him out of jail. Fearing that all her sons were going to be killed, the family moved moved to Arkansas (Craighead County). Any additional information and/or documentation on these family members would be most appreciated. Thank you.
