Wow! Thanks for the information! I had suspected that some of the Norwood land is now under Falls Lake, and had spent some time researching with the Army Corps of Engineers to see if there were any records about whose land was used and what was moved and what was left behind. I would most likely need to do an extensive search of land deeds and maps to create this list myself. :> Where did you get this information? I would love to know for my own research on other families in the area. Anyway, yes, I believe that Vera Hunter Norwood was the daughter of John A. Norwood and Alice Ann Mangum, although I have her name as Valerie Hunter Norwood, as documented by the 1880 Census of Wake County. Maybe she went by Vera. Her middle name Hunter probably comes from her descent from Isaac Hunter, a founder of Raleigh, NC. I have found a marriage of Augustine Norwood to Rebecca Hunter, and I believe they are the parents of John A. Norwood. Augustine's estate does mention a son John, but I wasn't certain of the connection until I looked in the 1850 Census. In NC, Wake County, St. Matthews township, I found Rebecca Norwood (widow) as head of household with her son John Norwood (age 29) and his new wife Aley Ann Norwood (age 16!) My husband descends from John and "Annie" Norwood through their son Robert Layton Norwood (Robert was my husband's great-grandfather). Robert was born in August of 1865 (Wake County) and married Mary Catherine "Mollie" King in 1891. At the time of the marriage, Mollie was only 15 years old (while Robert was 26), and I have a copy of the permission note that Mollie's parents gave for the marriage to take place. Her parents were John Louis King and Emma Lee O'Neal of Oak Grove/Carr Township, Wake County, NC. Robert died in April of 1901 (about age 36), I believe in an accident, but I have never been able to find a death record for him. I have the date from his estate papers, which mention something to the effect that he died while in the process of clearing his land. Robert and his brother George B. Norwood had purchased some land together not long before Robert died. The parcel was paid for by George, and Robert was to pay him back for his half. The estate papers detail the legal battles over this land that continued for decades. Mollie was widowed at age 25 with four small children, including my husband's grandfather, Joseph William Norwood (1898-1986). Mollie married twice more: to John Layton in 1902--they had one child, then John died: then Mollie married Adolphus D. Ross in 1906 and had three more children. Mollie passed away in Durham, NC in 1974, and is buried in Durham at Maplewood Cemetery. As for Robert L. Norwood, I have never been able to find his grave, and also suspect that it might be under Falls Lake. Descendants of this Norwood family still live in Wake County, and even on land that was owned by George B. Norwood (Robert's brother). I have corresponded with a descendant of George's and she says that there is a Norwood Cemetery, but I believe it is on private property. I have a bit more information on John and Annie (Mangum) Norwood's descendants, gleaned from Census and Estate records, so let me know if you need more! -Tamara Notify Administrator about this message?
