John -- I am getting my Van Winkle info from the same source you are except that "Uncle" Dan Van Winkle said the date of Altje and John Mandeville's marriage was March 29, 1807 instead of 1806.

I have often wondered if his son, your ancestor John, lived to have a family. I wish my Aunt Helen and my dad were alive to know about you.

Uncle Dan Van Winkle was the uncle, by marriage, of my grandmother, Elizabeth Francis Smith who married Luther Mandeville in 1890. Since he was also related to Aeltje Van Winkle on the Mandeville side, he was double related to my Mandeville grandparents. About 1931, my Aunt Jo in Tacoma, Washington wanted to join the DAR.

Uncle Dan who lived about 95 years was contacted and gave us quite a bit of information. Also other family members gave us information about Henry J. Mandeville and his sister's family gave the info in Rachel Vreeland's bible as to John and Aeltje's marriage date (1807). I think Molly Van Riper was Rachel's daughter but she could be descended from John and Altje's daughter.

I have a copy of Uncle Dan's "Old Bergen" which was published in 1902 and gifted to my grandparents by him in 1904.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but Time Warner has had some problems because of storms so both our phone and the internet have been out. In addition, I am just getting back into this genology paperwork and having to type my records onto a new system, and since I haven't done this since 1965, I am having trouble following all the geneology systems including getting back to your forum.

Eventually I would prefer to talk with you over the phone but I am still finding the best method to keep track of the paperwork. Fortunately I am a Katherine Gibbs graduate so I still enjoy keeping files straight. I sure didn't in the years I was working.

I am also curious about your Heaton side 'cause my Aunt, Mary Josephine Mandeville married Carl Edwin Heaton, born, I believe in Iowa, maybe Indiana, and they moved to Tacoma.
I have wondered how they met in New Jersey. I have his ancestory simply because the mother of another Heaton in Tacoma loved my Aunt and wrote down Carl Heaton's geneology as well as her side of her Heaton family.

More than enough for now. Reply now if you wish, or I will get in touch when I have more typing done and can find the data quickly. In the meantime my line of descent is John and Aeltje, Henry J. and Rachel Vreeland, Cornelius and Mary Jane Wilson, Luther and Francis Smith, my father Theodore Smith Mandeville (died in 1971) finally to me. I have a brother, T. S. Mandeville, Jr. who is a retired judge in Rutland, VT. (I don't know where you live so I am giving you that info.) I am in the middle of Ohio near Mt. Vernon.
