Rick,
This is a shot in the dark, but hoping you might be able to help.
I have a John M. McCoy in my line, believed to be born 1844 in Natchez, Adams Co., MS.It is not certain, but his mother's name might be Minerva Kirk, and his father's name is unknown.
I have been unable to find a McCoy family in that location in the 1850 census, but in 1860, I found the family of Nicholas McCoy with a wife named Minerva and a son named John of about the right age living in Missouri - which is where our John met and married his future wife.
The catch is that family lore includes the story that one of the McCoy ancestors wasn't really a McCoy, but took on the name (adopted?) of his stepfather, when his own father died when he was young and his mother remarried to a McCoy.The structure of the Nicholas McCoy family in 1860 certainly suggests this is a second marriage for Minerva, so I'm guessing that it is John M. McCoy who was not a "real McCoy".
The reason I'm writing to you is that John's middle name is thought to be Manville or Mansville or something like that - maybe even Mandeville.Finding the Mandeville's in Natchez in 1850 makes me think there might just be a link here, either to John McCoy's father's family, or perhaps to Minerva's family.
The family story says that John's real surname might have been Burgess/Berge/Burge or something like that, but I don't find anyone by that name in 1850 MS either.
I haven't been able to find Nicholas McCoy in 1850, although two of his brothers were living in Wyoming Co., New York in that year.By 1860 they are living in Muscatine Co., Iowa.A son named Nicholas, probably born to Nicholas and Minerva, was reported born in 1858 in Iowa.
Nicholas McCoy's family stays in Missouri through 1870, and by 1880 is found in Tarrant Co., TX, but our John is no longer living with this family in 1870 and 1880 and I haven't been able to find him in those years.By 1900, John's family is living in California.
My question for you is wondering if any of these names or stories rings any bells for you in your knowledge of the Mandeville family?Any possible connections here?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
