Of the Godfridus, the first in the above extract, he further says: "When William, Duke of Normandy, 'the Conqueror', passed over into England, A.D. 1066, he was accompanied by one Godfridus de Mannavilla, who, on the distributory lands and lordships which afterward took place, was very liberally rewarded for his services." His name appears among others in the celebrated Doomsday Book; this is affirmed by Camden and Renains as follows: 'In the authentical record called Doomsday, surnames are first found, brought in there by the Normans, who not long before first took them, but first noted with De such a place, as Godfridus de Mannavilla.'"
The facts thus given in the life of Godfridus doubtless have given rise to the traditions floating n the family concerning migration to England and knighthood "de" of members of the family in early days.
It is said that one of the family built a church in London, which is still standing (or was a few years since), an engraved picture of which was in possession of John C. Mandeville, Esq. of Newark, N.J.
This one must have been of a different spirit from the celebrated Sir John Maundeville, who was born in St. Albans, Eng. about 1300. He was a man of scholastic learning, and also acquainted with medicine and natural science as understood in that day. His fame, however, rests upon his extensive travels in Eastern lands, covering, according, to one account thirty-four years. He published his narrative of them--which is not regarded as reliable authority in history--in latin, Norman-French and English. He died in Liege, Belgium, in 1372.
