He gives for this theory of the name this statement: "I have in my possession a fac simile of an effigy on the tomb of a grandson of this Godfridus, accompanied by a brief biography:
"Geoffrey de Maquavilla, or Mandeville, Earl of Essex," and gives this quotation from English authorities:
"This effigy is rightly assigned to Geoffrey de Mandeville, Earl of Essex. His grandfather of same name (ie., Godfridus, English Geoffrey) came over with the Norman, William, and was rewarded for his services in the invasion and conquest of England by the gift of numerous lordships, which descended to William, his son, who married Margaret, daughter of Endo Dassifer, or steward to William the First. Geoffrey, the subject of this effigy, was their son and heir, and in the 5th of King Stephen fined for the living of his inheritance. He was hereditary Constable of the Tower of London, and was created by King Stephen, Earl of Essex, etc. etc."
