Hi Duncan,
When we were in the UK this summer, I stopped at one of those booths they have set up for tourists that tell about name origins. The lady there got two results: Maltman is an occupational name (a person who works in a distillery -- and wouldn't that make sense in Scotland?) and Maltman can be derived from Mal terre (from the French, meaning "bad land" -- presumably land that could not produce a crop). My family emigrated from Scotland to Canada before 1840 (Joseph Maltman) but I haven't found where in Scotland they originated. A man in Ohio told me that the name came from German immigrants to Scotland, but I haven't found anything to back that up. Good luck in your quest. Kym Maltman Collar.
P.S. Duncan is a given name in my family too.
