Laurence,
Thank you for the thoughtful and helpful post. I would not be surprised if the info from the oral history is inaccurate - wouldn't be the first time. Re his birthdate, my guess is that he was born post-1800. I found some early databases of expat births in Malta, but he does not show up. I have no dates for his life events, except for the births of his children, ranging from the mid-1830s to the mid 1850s. This info is not from original sources (ie, Palermo birth certificates), but from US immigration and death records. To obtain any additional info on him, I likely will have to go on a fishing expedition w/Palermo microfilm, unless a Sicilian genealogist has already indexed these. Another potential source is Maltese passport records, but I have no idea what year. Have any Maltese records, like passport applications, been indexed? Can the Maltese archives staff do a multi-year search? I also plan to obtain the US death certificate of his son, to see if his birthplace info is consistent w/that appearing on his daughter's death cert. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Michelle
