My g-mother is Carmela Caruana Locano who was born in Sfax, Tunisia in 1855. I have been trying to connect her to Orlando Emmanuele Caruana. This information was posted on the Malta Family History website: "Orlando Emanuel CARUANA, was born in Valletta on 23rd June 1844. Fought in the American Civil War as a Private in the 51st New York Infantry. ........He died 14th September 1917, and was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Washington DC, U.S.A."
I have Emmanuele's pension papers from the U.S., the record from his second marriage,an obituary with his picture. I know that he was shot in his foot in the Civil War and some of his medical problems as he aged. But none of these documents tell me of his parents or siblings. Does anyone out there know? He married in the States so the Adami collection won't help. Are there any sources of birth or baptismal records other than writing to the individual parishes? Thanks for any help or suggestions
