Hello Gene!
First of all, I had better let you know, that I'm NOT a member of the Mattocks family.I have, however, done a great deal of research on behalf of my mother's friend who is a Mattocks!I have been in touch with a lot of Mattocks' family members, all of whom are stumped by William's parentage.Unfortunately, the family to whom you refer is, as far as I can see, not his family.I have traced the William in this family (father Richard) past the 1861 mark, when 'our' William was married and living in Malta.Further, I have been corresponding with another member who had the birth certificate of one of William's children. The Maltese certificates are much like the Scottish, in that they give a great deal more information. This certificate gave William's father as John Mattocks, deceased shoemaker. For a long time I had thought that Williammay have been the illigitimate son of John Mattocks of Blackburn, who was an unmarried shoemaker living with his brother James and his family, he also was a shoemaker. This John died in 1862 I believe - I haven't kept or recorded all the information, as I passed it all to my mother's friend. This John was born about 1814 in Westmorland. If you have Ancestry.com, it's fairly easy to track him backwards and forwards through the census. My theory is that for some reason or other William was born under another name and then maybe lived with John between Census dates. He enlisted with the Army in Liverpool in September 1857 aged 19, occupation a Shoemaker born Blackburn, I've tried all combinations and spellings of Mattocks and Sutton on both the 1841 and 1851 census, but nothing really feels 'right'.By the way, John Mattocks and his brother and family are the only Mattockses in Blackburn, it's a bit of a co-incidence that they are Shoemakers as well!Poor old John and James and their children all seemed to die pretty young - on cold and rainy days I often track them all, but I can't catagorically say they are the right family.Sorry to say, I'm a very keen gardener, and during the Spring and Summer months I don't spend much time on genealogy, but I'm intrigued how you fit into the tree and would be willing to share some of my research (not current or living family of course), if you would like to corrrespond with me please use my email address.
Best wishes for now,
Julie
