I am not sure. But that's what my father-in-law David Malson had thought. He said something about he thought he owned a milk farm and it was a business decision because the name looked more successful or something like that.There were lots of reasons people changed their names or spellings, even within the same family. My dad's uncle and his brother had a fight and he changed the spelling of his last name from Daus to Dewesz. Makes our job a lot harder when searching for them.
