There's a small town called Malpas in France. Family hearsay had it that the name was originally French, which seems to make sense in view of the fact that "Mal pas" means "Bad step" in French.
There were supposed to have been some Hugenot (ie protestant) Malpasses who moved to England before 1685 when Louis XIV repealed the Edict of Nantes (which had granted religious tolerance to protestants in France). They apparently wanted to escape persecution in Protestant England.
