Hello Mike:
I research the Irish Family History Foundation's database. It contains 12,800,000 surviving rcds for abt 70% of Irish counties. Rcds are increasingly sparse B4 1840, rare B4 1800. Cos. Donegal and Derry were recently added to the database.
Note 1 - Without a KNOWN county, the chance of an ancestor's rcds NOT being in this database is AT LEAST 30%.
Note 2 - Only 1/2 of Co. Cork's rcds are in this database.
Note 3 - The RC church kept control over most parish rcds from Tipperary (north). These are ONLY available thru the Tipperary Family History Research center at a substantial fee (regardless of outcome).
Note 4 - Microfilms of parish church rcds are kept by the National Library of Ireland (NLI).
For Mary Rose Maloney B 1897 (exact), Ballyshannon CR, Co. Donegal, with a father forenamed James, I found 1 rcd.
For ???? Maloney B ????, Ballyshannon CR district, Co. Donegal, I found NO rcds. If Mary Rose had siblings, they were born/registered elsewhere.
For James Maloney M ????, Co. Donegal, I found 2 rcds: 1in 1888, the other in 1897 (Raphoe RC parish) within a reasonable range.
For Mary Thompson M in 1888 or 1897, I foundrcd in 1897, Raphoe RC parish. These are highly likely to be for your ancestors. A view of the detailed rcds MAY reveal their parents' names as well as other info.
For Mary Thompson B 1876 +/- 4 yrs, Co. Donegal with the father's forename unknown, I found 10 rcds: 1872, 1874, 2-1875, 3-1877, 1878, 1879, and 1880. Father's forenames were Andrew, James, Benjamin, Samuel, Joseph, Francis, Joseph, William, William, and Thomas respectively.
For Michael Thompson B ditto, I found NO rcds anywhere at any date in Co. Donegal.
For James Maloney B 1874 ditto, I found 1 civil rcd in 1873, Ardara CR district. A view of the detailed rcd SHOULD show the parents' names.
Google the Foundation's name to lead you to this database. Register, opt to be notified as rcds are added and browse. Pls post your search results to my genforum msg.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
