I guess I should jump in here. Among my wife's ancestors are Jacob Mallow and Catherine Gortner. There were three "Gortner gals", apparently sisters, who migrated to Missouri with their husbands, Catherine with Jacob, Charlotte with Michael Mallow, Jr., who moved on to Hempstead County, Arkansas and apparently to Texas, and Elizabeth who married Andrew Stuart Dickey. There is some information online at the Washington County, Missouri GenWeb site for the Dickey family. Please visit my web site at http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/DanielCowden/COWDENDW/index.htm or contact me for any info I have which you might need. Other spellings I have seen for Gortner include Gutner, Gortnor, and Curtnir. I have adopted the Gortner spelling since one of Jacob's children is George Gortner Mallow.

I suspect that I have the same picture of the Mallow home in Alleghany County, Virginia, which was included in a newspaper article in the Virginia Covington, "Old House Marks Passing Of An Era", August 19, 1965:Twelve. If anybody wants a scanned image of the article, please e-mail me.

Much of my information comes from the "Record of the Peaked Mountain Church", which is currently online at, ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/rockingham/churches/peakmtn.txt, and on one of Broderbunds CDs, with only minor differences.

I am very much interested in collecting and/or comparing sources for the names and dates in these threads, and will share what I have.
