Dear Jonathan,
In response to your queries,
Paul Edwin Hastings would certainly have been a 'Mining Engineer', as he was originally a Sugar Machinery engineer for John McNeil & Co of Govan, Lanarkshire.
He arrived in Malaya (FMS) sometime after 1913/1914 from Vancouver, Canada, Married Olga Lillian, and had his sole child, Leslie J Hastings, in 1915.
The V has no validity to my knowledge, and I have his baptismal record from Hong Kong and various shipping passenger lists.
My guess is that he was a freelancer, as he had failed some part of his qualification to be a IMechE.
With regards, David Oakley
