Thanks for the information on Paul Edward Hastings. The
Red Cross list of Sumatra internees record him as 'Miner'and
a massive list of 'missing' Malayans drawn up by a civilian in Changi Gaol records him as 'Mining Engineer.' Unfortunately he is not in the 1935 or 1940 Malayan Directories so I've been unable which company he worked for. Of course, he may have had his own small mining concern.
We also have a third initial V. P.E.V. Hastings - is this valid?
You may be interested to view the Sumatra section of our Malayan Volunteers Group website - I can be contacted via this website. We have plans to put up to 4 memorials to the Sumatra internees in the Palembang/Muntok area. Several of our members were child internees in Sumatra or are children
/grandchildren of Sumatra internees.
best wishes
