graham - I have a family of Makinson who lived in Blackrod from about 1793 to about 1807. According to the family History by word of mouth the father Evan had Tan Pits at the bottom of Tanners Brow (or Brew) on the south east corner of the intersection of Tanners Brow, Crown Lane & Chorley Road (the A6); approximately diagonaly opposite the Ridgeway Arms. 5 children were born in Blackrod & Christened at St. Katherines Church. If you know the name of your GGG-G/Father I maybe able to help. Evan is supposed to have had a reputation as being the parent of a number of children out of wedlock in addition to the 9 he had during his married life from 1791 to 1829.
Happy Huntingin your Quest
Arthur
