David - recently I have returned to my family tree having been spurd on by suggestions from Linda E. Asaro.
On checking the 1881 British Census for Horwich, Lancashire I found your Thomas Makinson with a Daughter Alice aged 1 year. Assuming that Thomas is the Thomas Born 1846 and is the one in my Family Tree. His Brother Evan is my Greatgrandfather and you will find his father in the 1881 British Census as Robert Makinson at Whittles Farm, Fleet Street, Horwich, Bolton, Lancashire, England.
Let me know if the details match and if they do I can take you back to 2 or 3 generations to a John Makinson of Goosnargh, Lancashire.
Hoping that this information is helpful.
Regards
Arthur Jones
